Valentine’s Day is such a great excuse to run away to the Texas Hill Country with your favorite person. Most people think of the summer when they think of Concan and the Frio River. However, the offseason is actually a great time to visit. There is something magical about connecting with your person in the country, surrounded by the rivers and hills with little to no people around.

Hiking
The offseason is the best time to hike at Garner State Park. Most people hike at Garner in the summer, but Texas summers get HOT, making the hike less enjoyable. January and February are perfect for hiking, because Texas winters are generally mild. Old Baldy and The Blinn River Trail are two of the best hikes to try out while you are in Concan. Old Baldy can get a little steep, leading you to a beautiful bird’s eye view of the Frio River. The Blinn River trail is an easy flat trail along the Frio, showing off some of the most beautiful tucked away spots of the river.

Where to eat
Leakey Drug is a new eatery in Leakey, Texas, and is a must stop. They serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner, as well as coffee. The food is fresh and delicious. The atmosphere is cozy, making it the perfect spot for a romantic dinner.
Enjoy the Frio River
The Frio is too cold to swim in for Valentine’s Day, but that doesn’t have to stop you from enjoying the river. You can canoe, kayak, or stand up paddle board. Bring your own, or rent from the Garner State Park Boat House (Saturday’s only in Feb) or Andy’s. Most spots along the Frio are too shallow or rocky for SUP, but the dam at Garner is one of the few places you are actually able to SUP.
