Valentine’s Day is such a great excuse to run away to the Texas Hill Country with your favorite person. Most people think of the summer when they think of Concan and the Frio River. However, the offseason is actually a great time to visit. There is something magical about connecting with your person in the country, surrounded by the rivers and hills with little to no people around.

The offseason is the best time to hike at Garner State Park. Most people hike at Garner in the summer, but Texas summers get HOT, making the hike less enjoyable. January and February are perfect for hiking, because Texas winters are generally mild. Old Baldy and The Blinn River Trail are two of the best hikes to try out while you are in Concan. Old Baldy can get a little steep, leading you to a beautiful bird’s eye view of the Frio River. The Blinn River trail is an easy flat trail along the Frio, showing off some of the most beautiful tucked away spots of the river.

Enjoy the Frio River

The Frio is too cold to swim in for Valentine’s Day, but that doesn’t have to stop you from enjoying the river. You can canoe, kayak, or stand up paddle board. Bring your own, or rent from the Garner State Park Boat House (Saturday’s only in Feb) or Andy’s. Most spots along the Frio are too shallow or rocky for SUP, but the dam at Garner is one of the few places you are actually able to SUP.

The Laurel Tree

If you are looking for a gourmet dining experience, The Laurel Tree is where it’s at. This dining table is open Saturdays only, by reservation. Be sure to call ahead, as they tend to reach maximum occupancy well in advance. The food is always unique, and features a four course prix fixe menu. One of the most unique features of the restaurant is that the table is yours for the night, there is no turnover, so you are able to take your time and enjoy your date. You are encouraged to wander the grounds and check out all of the beautiful European antiques.

Where to Stay

Valentine’s Day in the Texas Hill Country would not be complete without a cute place to stay. The nights tend to be a little chilly in Feburary, so you’ll want to cozy up next to your person in one of our adorable tiny homes. Each home is unique, and features a totally different vibe. Pick your house here, but be sure to book asap before someone else books your favorite house.
